Once a shining beacon of Tucson's hospitality scene, the dormant Hotel Arizona is set to be revitalized, marking a new chapter in the city's history. This 13-story building, adjacent to the Tucson Convention Center, has been dormant for 14 years, but now it's undergoing a transformation that promises to bring a touch of luxury and nostalgia to the downtown area.
What makes this project particularly intriguing is its connection to the legendary Braniff International Airways. In the 1970s, Braniff Place Hotel, a gem in Tucson's crown, was a testament to the airline's unique style and elegance. Braniff, known for its vibrant "Flying Colors" fleet and high-fashion uniforms, set itself apart from the competition. As Ben Cass, a retired Braniff pilot and historian, explains, "No one had ever taken an airplane and turned it into an artist's canvas, painting it with bright solid colors or mid-century modern hues."
The Braniff Place Hotel, which opened in December 1973, was a marvel. It was the tallest hotel in Tucson at the time, and its grandeur was further emphasized by Braniff's absence from Tucson for the first five years, adding an air of exclusivity. Jerry Fischer, the project manager, reminisces about his childhood experiences with Braniff, where dressing up for a flight was the norm, creating an era of travel that Braniff proudly embodied.
Now, as the Hotel Arizona is reborn as a Hyatt Regency, there's a sense of continuity with the past. HSL Properties is investing $7 million in remediation and interior demolition, creating a blank canvas for the future. The lobby, for instance, will feature an upscale bar and restaurant with patio seating, a nod to the hotel's former glory. Fischer emphasizes the importance of preserving the building's unique structure, combining mid-century architecture with modern elements to maintain its distinct character.
The Hyatt Regency brand, with its expertise in convention hotels, seems like the perfect fit for this downtown property. With over 22,000 square feet of meeting space, the hotel will work closely with the Tucson Convention Center to attract large groups and conventions. Fischer and Cass are also exploring ways to pay homage to Braniff's legacy, perhaps through a special installation, ensuring that the spirit of Braniff remains alive in the new hotel.
As the construction progresses on schedule and under budget, the anticipation for the Hyatt Regency Tucson Downtown's opening in late 2027 grows. This project not only promises to rejuvenate a dormant piece of Tucson's history but also to create a new landmark that blends the past and present, offering a unique experience to visitors and locals alike.
