Oregon's Animal Rights Revolution: Hunting, Fishing, and Livestock Under Siege
Imagine a world where hunting, fishing, and livestock slaughter are banned. It might sound extreme, but that's exactly what animal rights advocates in Oregon are pushing for. The Initiative Petition 28 aims to revolutionize animal protection laws, extending safeguards beyond pets to wildlife and livestock.
The initiative, known as the PEACE Act (People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions), seeks to remove exemptions from current animal cruelty laws, criminalizing any activity that injures or kills animals, except for self-defense and veterinary practices. This means that salmon, deer, cattle, and lab animals would receive the same level of protection as family pets, significantly impacting industries like farming, fishing, scientific research, and restaurants.
The campaign has already gathered over 92,000 signatures, with a goal of reaching 117,173 by July 2. While it's uncertain if the initiative will make it onto the November ballot, the organizers are determined, drawing inspiration from the women's suffrage movement, which took decades to achieve success.
David Michelson, leading the initiative, emphasizes the need to recognize the needs of all animals, not just pets. He highlights the importance of finding alternatives to meet human needs without compromising animal welfare, such as non-lethal wildlife management, organs-on-chips for research, and alternatives to animal agriculture.
However, the initiative faces strong opposition from industry groups. The Oregon Hunters Association claims that every Oregonian would be affected, while AGPROfessionals calls it a threat to agriculture and animal ownership. Critics argue that it would criminalize agricultural practices and recreational activities, attacking those who adhere to strict animal care standards.
Despite the challenges, Michelson remains optimistic, acknowledging that changing public perception is a gradual process. He sees the initiative as a powerful statement, even if it doesn't pass in 2026, as it sparks a conversation about the direction society should take regarding animal rights.
The campaign's long-term vision is to inspire a shift in societal attitudes, similar to the women's suffrage movement. With only 1-2% of the U.S. population currently vegan, Michelson believes that even a small percentage of support for the initiative would indicate a growing interest in a more compassionate society.
