Nigeria's ambitious plan to ignite an industrial revolution in the north is centered around a long-awaited gas pipeline, which has been a work in progress since 2008. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) is determined to make this project a reality, with a price tag of $2.8 billion. The pipeline's completion is a significant milestone, as it will enable the transportation of gas, a resource Nigeria produces more of than oil. However, the country has historically struggled with gas flaring, burning off a substantial portion of its gas due to inadequate gathering and transport systems.
Bashir Ojulari, the CEO of NNPC, emphasizes the pipeline's potential to transform the region. He states, 'This is not just about energy; it's about industrialization. We aim to establish fertilizer plants, power generation facilities, and gas-based industries in Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, and Ajaokuta, leading to the emergence of industrial parks.'
The NNPC has taken proactive measures to address gas flaring. In a recent development, they issued gas purchase permits to 28 companies, allowing them to capture gas that would otherwise be wasted. If these projects progress, the NNPC estimates that between 250 million and 300 million standard cubic feet of gas could be captured and sold, attracting up to $2 billion in investment. This gas can be utilized for power generation and industrial needs.
Additionally, the NNPC has set an ambitious oil production target for the upcoming year, aiming to increase output from 1.7 million barrels daily this year to 1.8 million barrels daily, and further expand to 2 million barrels daily by 2027. This strategy highlights Nigeria's commitment to diversifying its energy sector and fostering industrial growth.
