The project presented a unique challenge: an extension on a 2.5-metre-wide plot, accessible only via narrow alleyways. Instead of seeing this as a limitation, ODDO Architects embraced it as an opportunity to create something extraordinary.
Social Intensity: A Key Inspiration
Hanoi's urban alleyways are a hub of social activity. ODDO Architects drew inspiration from this 'social intensity', aiming to replicate the vibrant community life within the confines of the new extension.
"The daily interactions in Hanoi's alleyways, from shared tea to spontaneous social exchanges, inspired our design approach," the studio explained.
A Stacked, Flexible Layout
The result is a stacked series of flexible spaces, each with varying degrees of privacy. Visual connections between floors are maintained through internal windows and unique openings, creating a sense of flow and openness.
Ground Floor: A Seamless Blend
On the ground floor, a new kitchen and dining area seamlessly integrate with the existing home. A wall of folding glass doors opens up to the adjacent alley, inviting the outside in.
Upper Levels: Warmth and Connection
Above, a living room, tea room, and new bedrooms are visually linked, creating a sense of unity. The use of timber panels on the upper levels adds a warm contrast to the exposed concrete and dark stone of the lower spaces.
