Embarking on a road trip across Labrador in an electric vehicle (EV) is an audacious endeavor, to say the least. I recently took on this challenge with the Toyota bZ Woodland, an all-electric mid-size SUV, to test the feasibility of such a journey. The route, spanning over 1,600 kilometers, presents a unique set of challenges for EV drivers, particularly in remote areas like Labrador. The journey begins in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and ends in Goose Bay, Newfoundland, with a stop at Labrador City along the way. The highway is now fully paved from Goose Bay to the coast, offering a more accessible route compared to the past. However, the absence of quick and easy Tesla chargers north of the St. Lawrence River and east of Quebec City poses a significant challenge. Public charging stations, which are often necessary for long-distance EV travel, come with premium pricing, sometimes costing as much as filling up a gas tank for the same distance. The journey to Manic 5, a massive hydro dam, was straightforward, with the Toyota charging at a Circuit électrique station. However, the road to Fermont, Quebec, is more challenging, with gravel and construction for 100 kilometers before giving way to smooth asphalt. The Toyota's battery was drained to 70% due to the rough terrain, highlighting the need for careful planning and slow driving to conserve energy. The next chargers are located at Penney's Pit Stop in Port Hope Simpson, 420 kilometers away, with another 200 kilometers to the ferry. The utilization rate of fast chargers along the route is low, making it difficult for providers to turn a profit. The bZ Woodland contributed $162.10 to the Quebec and Labrador charging companies over the course of the 1,600-kilometer road trip, highlighting the financial burden of EV travel in remote areas. In my opinion, the journey across Labrador in an EV is an adventure that requires careful planning, slow driving, and a generous range. It's still an adventure, but one that demands preparation and patience. The experience is unique, and the challenges are worth the reward of exploring the remote wilderness of Labrador.
